The opening week of the football season brought about mixed results among 12-6A teams with Lufkin picking up a marquee win while The Woodlands squeaked out a victory over Cy-Fair. Beaumont West Brook came from behind to top crosstown rival Beaumont Central, while Montgomery took a defensive minded 18-5 victory over Strake Jesuit.
On the other end of the spectrum, College Park, Oak Ridge and Conroe each suffered defeats in the opening week. This week, 12-6A teams will look to continue to build toward district play in a slate that features some old rivalries. The Panthers will cross the Angelina River to take on Nacogdoches while Beaumont West Brook hosts Beaumont Ozen.
Here is a look back at last week’s action and a look ahead to this week’s games. Lufkin (1-0) at Nacogdoches (1-0) – The opener couldn’t have gone much better for the Panthers, who took a 35-24 win over Longview in a matchup of two of the state’s more recognizable programs. The Panthers’ offense showed consistency while the defense made the plays down the stretch in a tight contest.
Next up for the Panthers is a trip to face a Nacogdoches team that dominated Kilgore in a 48-21 victory. Noah Hildebrand led the way for the Dragons with 255 passing yards while Josh Thompson returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score. Phillip Jones added 121 yards on 18 carries.
Spring at The Woodlands (1-0) – The Highlanders had their hands full in hanging on for a 23-20 win over Cy-Fair in the season opener. With the offense stalling for much of the night, the defense did the heavy lifting, forcing four turnovers. Cameron Arnold had two of those interceptions for The Woodlands. Next up for The Woodlands is a home game against Spring.
The Lions raced out to a 32-7 win over Clear Falls in the season opener. Beaumont Ozen (0-1) at Beaumont West Brook (1-0)– Marcus Johnson threw for 183 yards and two scores as West Brook rallied late for a 33-21 win over Beaumont Central. West Brook trailed 21-12 in the second half before scoring the last 22 points for a come-from behind win.
Kandin Robertson caught five passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and Bralin Simon had five receptions for 86 yards and a score. Next up for West Brook is another game against a crosstown rival as it will face Beaumont Ozen. Ozen was roughed up in the opener, dropping a 64-0 game to Episcopal. College Park (0-1) at Klein (1-0) – College Park had no answers for Port Arthur Memorial in the opener as they were held to a total of 96 yards, with more than half of those coming in the final three minutes.
Alex Williams led the way for Memorial with 161 yards on 28 carries. Meanwhile, Tucker Woody led College Park with 58 rushing yards. The Cavs will look to break into the win column when they travel to take on Klein on Friday night. Klein is 1-0 on the season after taking a 34-12 win over Benjamin Davis. Montgomery (1-0) at Eisenhower (0-1) – On a night that the Montgomery offense struggled to get going, the defense carried them to an 18-5 win over Strake Jesuit. Montgomery got the win by holding Strake Jesuit to a total of 137 yards, including just 16 through the air.
Jordan Hood led the Montgomery offense with 98 yards on 8-of-18 passing. He also ran for 43 yards on 10 carries. Alex Nunn led the ground game with 86 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Montgomery will look to make it 2-0 on Friday night as it travels to face Aldine Eisenhower, which opened the season with a 24-22 loss to Fort Bend Hightower. Elkins (0-1) at Oak Ridge (0-1) – The War Eagles had plenty of highlights on opening night, including a 94-yard kickoff return from Kamari Williams, but they couldn’t hold off a tough Pearland Dawson team in a 31-21 loss.
Bishop Durst struggled in the passing game for Oak Ridge with 101 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-17 passing. Jimmie Moore added 57 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. However, the defense couldn’t come up with an answer for Darrius Smith, who ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Oak Ridge will go after its first win on Friday as it hosts Elkins, which opened the season with a 51-14 decision to Dickinson. Klein Forest (0-1) at Conroe (0-1) – Conroe flashed plenty of offensive firepower in the opener but struggled to get any stops in a 55-42 loss to Cy-Springs.
In the losing effort, Donaven Lloyd ran for 308 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries, and Colby Kizzie threw for 224 yards and two scores. Jo’Vaughn Martin caught six passes for 184 yards and two scores. The Tigers will go after their first win against Klein Forest this week.
