Former Lufkin Panther Trey Cumbie continues to add to his impressive collegiate resume as he was named to the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) Freshman All-America Team on Monday. Cumbie was a second-team selection to the team as a left-handed pitcher for the Cougars. It was the second All-America honor for the Cougars’ freshman, who was also named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team last week.
He was named to the team along with teammate, Joe Davis, who was a first-team selection as a first baseman/designated hitter. They were the only two players from the American Athletic Conference to be named to the elite squad. Cumbie finished his freshman season with a 1.29 ERA to go along with a 5.2 record. He struck out 42 batters while walking nine in 56 innings of work. Cumbie is a 2015 graduate of Lufkin where he was a starting pitcher and quarterback for the Panthers.
