Former Lufkin Lady Panthers’ standout pitcher Alex Flores isn’t wasting any time in making her mark at the NCAA level. Just a month into her freshman season, she was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, which is presented by UniversalCoin.com, on Tuesday afternoon.
This past week, Flores came away with a 2-0 record. She allowed a single unearned run against South Alabama before taking the win in that game, a 7-1 decision.
In that game, she allowed five hits and struck out four batters in the complete game outing.
The team then made the trip to the West Coast to compete in the San Diego Classic over the weekend.
She was the winning pitcher in the team’s 7-6 win over San Diego State. Flores gave up 12 hits and struck out two in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Her efforts helped the team to a 5-1 record over the week.
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though they are not permitted to vote for their own player.
Flores and the rest of the McNeese State are off to a strong start against some of the best competition in the nation.
McNeese already has wins over Penn State, BYU and San Diego State while sporting a 12-10 record.
McNeese has also played traditional powerhouses LSU and Baylor.
Through the non-conference portion of the schedule, Flores has a 4-2 record.
Flores is a 2016 graduate of Lufkin High School where she pitched the Lady Panthers within a round of the state tournament.
McNeese State is the preseason pick to win the Southland Conference.
