The Lufkin Panthers’ beat the heat, along with some impressive teams, this past weekend at the state 7-on-7 tournament in College Station.
After dropping two of three games on the opening day, Lufkin made the most of the consolation bracket in winning a pair of games on Saturday. However, the Panthers came up just a few plays short in dropping a 27-21 decision to Mercedes, falling three wins shy
of the consolation championship.
Despite the loss, Lufkin had plenty of positives from the weekend.
The Panthers started the tournament with a narrow 38-32 loss to Georgetown in the tournament opener. They didn’t take long to shake off that loss in taking a 22-12 win over Haslet Eaton.
A 32-12 loss to Cinco Ranch in the final game of the day on Friday left Lufkin in third place in the group, putting the Panthers into the consolation bracket.
Earlier Saturday morning, Lufkin squeaked out a 32-31 win over The Colony before pummeling DeSoto,
However, Lufkin dropped the six-point decision in the finale in taking the loss.
Hutto eventually went on to win the consolation championship, while Lake Travis took the Division I championship bracket.
