Lufkin Athletes Headed To Regional Meet

Lufkin Athletes Headedto Regional MeetSeveral Lufkin athletes are headed to the Class 5A Region III Track and Field Meet after strong showings at the Class 5A District 15/16 Area meet in Whitehouse last week.

He raced to a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.71. That was enough to outdistance Greenville’s Thomas Gore, who placed second in a time of 15.05.

White also qualified for regionals by placing second in the 300-meter hurdles. Texas High’s Jaylen Rhone won the race with a time of 39.13, followed by White, who clocked in with a time of 39.93.

He will be joined by Le’Vante Williams, who earned his trip to regionals by placing second in the 3,200-meter run. Sulphur Springs’ Jacob Gatewood led the way with a time of 9:58.88.

Williams was his closest competition as he finished with a time of 10:01.64.

Lufkin’s Oscar Solis just missed out on a trip to regionals, finishing in sixth place with a time of 10:39.55.

Lufkin’s 800-meter relay team of DeAndre Bagley, Kordell Rodgers, Braylon Garcia and Jacorey Miller qualified for regionals by placing fourth with a time of 1:29.96.

Nacogdoches’ team of Alex Gregory, Luther Berry, Josh Thompson and Brandon Jones won first place with a time of 1:26.86, followed by teams from Longview and Marshall.

Lufkin’s regional contingent was rounded out on Friday as Auntarrion Coutee qualified for the regionals with a fourth-place finish in the discus. He had a distance of 130-9 to qualify for regionals in his freshman season.

Lufkin’s Karl Chatman just missed out on a regional berth with a throw of 46-5.5, which placed him fifth in the shot put. Jerrod Johnson was a fifth-place finisher in the discus with a throw of 123-2.

On the girls’ side, Lufkin’s Mycah McDonald just missed out on a regional berth by placing fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15-1. The top four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.

The Class 5A Region II Meet will be held on Friday and Saturday at UT-Arlington.
