With the best athletes from the district in town, the Lufkin Panthers held their own at the 12-6A Track and Field Meet, which was held at John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers finished in fourth place as a team, while the Lady Pack took sixth. Lufkin also had five athletes punch their tickets to the area meet with Top Four finishes.
Malik Jackson qualified for the area meet by placing in fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.36. That was just enough to edge out teammate Terrance Fields, who just missed out on an area berth with a fifth-place finish at 11.39.
The Panthers’ sprint relay team also won a spot in the area meet by placing fourth. The team consisting of Fields, Jackson, Jay’Lynn Polk and Breylon Garcia was fourth in a time of 42.11.
The 800-meter relay team of Jackson, Treyvion McDaniel, Polk and Garcia finished in second place with a time of 1:27.42, also qualifying for area.
The Panthers’ 1,600-meter relay team of Dummene Kponi, Demond Moreland, Marc Watts and Jordan Curl qualified for the area meet with a fourth-place finish in a time of 3:24.99.
Lufkin’s area qualifiers were rounded out by Jadrian Taylor, who earned his spot by placing fourth in the shot put with a distance of 50-11. That was just enough to outlast teammate March Thomas, who finished fifth with a throw of 46-1 ½, just missing out on an area berth.
Garcia also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.21, missing out on an area berth by .03 seconds.
Kponi finished in sixth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.54. Foster Mastin placed sixth in the discus with a distance of 115-3.
The Woodlands took first place in the boys’ meet with a total of 231 points. The Highlanders were followed by Oak Ridge (176), College Park (109), Lufkin (51), Montgomery (30) and Conroe (23).
On the girls’ side, The Woodlands also won the team event with a total of 195 points. They were followed by Oak Ridge (143), Conroe (120), College Park (96), Montgomery (58) and Lufkin (8).
The Lady Panthers’ sprint relay team of Ashley Ross, Marie Thomas, Aspeion Maxie and Lamiya Chatman placed sixth with a time of 51.45.
Lufkin’s 800-meter relay team of Thomas, Maxie, Mycah McDonald and Chatman placed sixth with a time of 1:50.61.
