With the 2017 soccer season just a little over a week away, the Lufkin Panthers began their preparations by blanking Tyler Lee, 2-0, in a scrimmage in Tyler on Wednesday afternoon.
Lufkin took a 1-0 lead into the halftime on the strength of a goal from Oscar Cordero. Rodrigo Molina added a goal on a penalty kick in the second half to provide the final margin.
In JV action, Kaung Hein scored both goals for the Panthers in a 2-1 win over John Tyler.
The Panthers will return home on Friday as they host New Caney Porter in a scrimmage. The JV scrimmage will start at noon with the varsity following at 2 p.m.
Lufkin will open the regular season on Jan. 5 when it competes in the Klein tournament. The Panthers’ home opener will be on Jan. 17 against Longview.
The Lufkin Panther Showcase is set for Jan. 19-21.
The Panthers are two years removed from the Class 5A state title and are coming off yet another playoff berth last season.
