In advancing to the playoffs and holding their own against some of the best competition the state has to offer, the Lufkin Lady Panthers had a pair of players receive even more postseason recognition when the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Softball Team was announced on Sunday morning.
Lufkin’s sophomore duo of Smiley Radke and Leah Akridge were each honorable-mention selections on the Class 6A squad.
Radke won her accolades for her exploits in the pitching circle in a season in which she struck out 316 batters. She also had a .395 batting average at the plate.
Akridge, a speedy sophomore shortstop for the Lady Panthers, earned her honors for her work at the plate, in the field and on the bases. She finished the season with a .523 average and was one of the team’s top base running threats.
Keller received two of the top honors in the state as Kasey Simpson was named Player of the Year and Bryan Poehler was named Coach of the Year.
