Senior Night could not have gotten any better as the Lufkin Panthers swept their share of the District 14-5A title on Friday, Nov. 6 on the hallowed ground of John Outlaw Memorial field.
Conroe and Lufkin spent the first quarter in a race to be the first to put points on the board. A gridlock seemed to be growing when a Conroe kick-off was tipped, putting Lufkin in excellent field position on their 44-yard line. Tyler Stubblefield completed the drive by running the ball in for the first touchdown of the night with only a minute left in the quarter.
Stubblefield would go on to complete 16 of 21 passes, gaining 326 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Tolbert led the night in rushing with 87 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. Jamal Jeffery received four catches to lead in receiving with 155 yards, scoring touchdowns on two of those carries. JaBryce Taylor was not far behind, catching nine passes for 129 yards, one of those for a touchdown.
Another big name for the night was defensive lineman Demontrai Lewis, who punished Conroe with three QB sacks. “I was excited. I got lots of tackles. My heart got bigger and bigger through the night and I had more to give,” he said.
Lufkin will now face Spring DeKaney (5-3) at Sam Houston State University on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. for bi-district playoffs. As for the Panthers, Lewis summed it all up when he told Dekaney, “I will be coming for you.”
