The Lufkin 11-12 year-old All-Stars are now a single win away from their first-ever trip to the Little League World Series and a familiar face is
standing in their way.
Lufkin will look to take the final step to the World Series on Wednesday night when it takes on McAllister Park at 6 in Waco. The game will be aired live on ESPN2.
The local all-stars have advanced to the championship game by winning their first three contests. Lufkin started the tournament with a 5-1 win over Colorado.
That was followed by an 11-10 win over the same McAllister Park team it will face tonight. In that game, Lufkin, also known as Texas East, trailed 7-0 before rallying for an extra-inning win.
That was followed by a convincing 8-0 win over Louisiana on Monday night. In that game, Hunter Ditsworth roped a long two-run homer. He will get the ball on the mound for Lufkin tonight after striking out 14 batters in the opening game.
McAllister Park, also known as Texas West, opened the tournament with a 12-0 win over Mississippi before falling to Lufkin.
Texas West bounced back with wins over Oklahoma (8-3), New Mexico (13-8) and Louisiana (19-13).
Due to the tournament being a modified double-elimination tournament, tonight’s game is a winner-take-all contest with the winner advancing to Williamsport despite Lufkin entering with an undefeated record.
This is the second time Lufkin has advanced to the Southwest regional final. Lufkin dropped a 9-0 decision to McAllister Park in the 2012 Southwest regional final.
The Little League World Series starts on Aug. 17. The winner of Wednesday night’s game will play against the Great Lakes winner on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
