Lufkin’s second game in the Holiday Hoopfest at Panther Gym came down to one point and one minute.
That was all Beaumont Central needed to win the game in the two-day tournament hosted by Lufkin that saw action from Hudson, Crockett, Beaumont Central, Nacogdoches and the boys’ Australian Tasmanian Institute of Sport basketball team.
There was no lack of defense or heart that kept Lufkin from winning. They pumped plenty of both while on the court. When the first half ended, Lufkin was even four points ahead of Beaumont.
In the third and fourth quarters, the Panthers pulled further ahead. As the final minutes of the fourth quarter wound down, Lufkin mounted a valiant effort to keep it that way. With several missed calls on both teams, that proved hard to do. Beaumont took the win, 45-43, but irony would strike later. Beaumont lost the final game of the tournament in a heated battle with Tyler Lee by one point and just seconds on the clock.
The two-point loss stings for Lufkin who came off two big wins, one in conference play against the Longview Lobos (63-47) and the other against Huntsville (63-36) during the tournament. Lufkin played Crockett for the third place contest and pulled out another win, 56-38, putting them at 2-1 for the tournament.
The Panthers turn back to conference play this week, hosting Whitehouse on Dec. 11 with tip-off set for 8:30 p.m. at Panther Gym.
