Walking in to Friday’s game against The Woodlands, Lufkin had the advantage. They won on the road against A&M Consolidated in quadruple overtime.
Attempting to carry that momentum onto the field, Tyler Stubblefield connected with KeKe Coutee early in the first quarter for a 59-yard touchdown pass. In the second, Kendrick Mapp made the 20-yard dash to even the score, 14-14.
Lufkin rallied late in the third when Stubblefield handed the ball off to Mapp who stepped over the line for his second touchdown. A Panther forced turnover on downs allowed Stubblefield to throw for 71 yards over three consecutive plays to Mapp, Coutee and JaBryce Taylor, taking the ball to the Woodlands’ 9-yard line. Stubblefield’s next pass was picked off, and the Woodlands would go on to win, 49-21.
Clenching the home win remains elusive to a maturing Lufkin Panther team. We do know how to win on the road, and expect to shut down Bryan High School on Friday night.
