With two of the top teams in District 16-5A clashing at Morris Frank Park, a chance for a win slipped through the hands of the Lufkin Panthers.
With the game tied at 1-1, Corsicana’s Jackson Kennemore sent a ball toward the outfield. It was missed by the outfielder, going all the way the fence. Kennemore eventually sprinted around the bases, providing the final margin in a 2-1 victory.
The loss was Lufkin’s first in district action while Corsicana remained perfect.
It also came on a night when the Panthers had outstanding pitching performances from Logan Lair and Christian Stephens.
Lair went the first eight innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.
Christian Stephens allowed one unearned run in two innings to take the loss on the mound.
Trevor Nolen was outstanding on the mound for Corsicana, going seven innings while allowing one earned run on one hit with eight strikeouts and a walk.
Corbin Hall got the save, allowing no runs on a hit with two strikeouts in three innings of work.
In the early going, Lair escaped damage with Corsicana leaving four runners on base, including two at third, in the first two innings.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the third inning on a squeeze bunt by Corbin Hall.
Lufkin tied the game in the fourth inning when Max Quick delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Luke Rowley, making it 1-1.
That proved to be Lufkin’s only hit until Ben Osgood’s single in the eighth inning.
Devan Lindsey and Kennemore led Corsicana’s hitting with a pair of hits.
The Panthers (13-5, 4-1) will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday night when they travel to face Jacksonville at 7.
