Christian Stephens pitched a complete game four-hit shutout and the Lufkin Panthers captured the pivotal first game of a Class 5A Region II Area playoff matchup with a 3-0 victory over the Waxahachie Indians at Tyler’s Mike Carter Field on Thursday night.
Stephens kept Waxahachie’s hitters off balance for the entire night as he struck out four hitters and walked two while using his defense to make the plays in Lufkin’s third win in four playoff games.
Lufkin got its offense going in the second inning when Ben Osgood delivered an RBI single to score Max Quick with the first run of the game.
The Panthers extended that lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Jonathan Dewberry laid down a nice bunt. When Waxahachie attempted to make a play at third base, the throw got away, allowing Max McCarty to come around to score from first base.
Dylan Murphy delivered an RBI triple in the fifth inning for the final run of the game.
Osgood led Lufkin’s hitting attack with a pair of singles and an RBI. Murphy had a triple and an RBI, and Dewberry, Quick and Haylen Green each had a single.
Lufkin will go for the sweep today at 4:30 p.m. as it plays the second game of the series at Tyler’s Mike Carter Field.
