Panthers’ basketball splits first two games of season



The Lufkin Panthers opened the season in impressive fashion by blasting the Marshall Mavericks on Friday night before coming up short in a road trip to face the Tyler Lee Red Raiders on Monday.

In the season opener, which was pushed back three days from its original date, Lufkin hit the floor ready to go in overwhelming the Mavericks.

Courtnee Garcia led the way for the Pack with 21 points, while JaCourtney Calvin added 12. Chris Thompson put in 11 to round out the double-digit scorers.

Other Lufkin scorers were Kodie Callison (7), Breylon Garcia, KeVonte Hurts, Kordell Rodgers and Nick Wilson (4) and Torrance Agnew, Kole Stubblefield and James Jeferson (2).

Lufkin raced out to an 18-6 lead after a quarter before extending that margin to 31-18 at halftime. The Panthers led 51-28 after three quarters before coasting to the win.

The Panthers then fell just short on Monday night, dropping a 65-60 decision to Tyler Lee.

Garcia once again led the Panthers with 19 points. Thompson scored 18 points.

Other Lufkin scorers were Callison (8), Calvin (4), Hurts (3), Rodgers (2) and Stubblefield, Wilson and Agnew (1).
