Panthers set area playoff game

With one playoff win in tow, the Lufkin Panthers will look to extend their postseason run even further as they take on Richardson Berkner in the area round of the playoffs later this week.

That Class 6A Region II Area playoff game will be held on Friday night at 7:30 at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium.

Lufkin is coming off a 57-55 win over Mesquite in the opening round of the playoffs. In that game, Courtnee Garcia led the way for the Panthers with 17 points.

Berkner is coming off a huge win of its own as it knocked off sixth-ranked Lakeview Centennial, 68-59, in the opening round of the playoffs Tuesday night. That was only the fourth loss of the season for Centennial.

Earlier this season, Centennial took 80-67 and 84-56 wins over Berkner.

Berkner finished the season as the fourth-place team in District 9-6A.

Lufkin finished in a tie for second place before losing a coin toss to Conroe to enter the playoffs as the district’s third seed. That didn’t deter the Panthers, who got past Mesquite in the opener.

The winner of Friday night’s game will take on the winner of the Dallas Skyline/Conroe game next week.
